Notorious Star Corsair Saga – Campaign Setting Project Dev Blog

notoriousscsrpg.com
This week I have been traveling a bunch and have been unable to sit down and write down story content. Instead I have been taking the long drives and runs to think about the core dice systems that I want to build the game around. Originally I was going to create the surrounding universe using an established game system out there then I could concentrate on world-building. But as I was reading various systems I found there isn’t a single system that I am willing to marry to at this time. Either the system required magic which I am trying to lean away from the combat and skills used different dice or would require a lot of background work on top of what I already have planned. Though these issues arent roadblocks per se as a game designer I can make it work but as the owner of the intellectual property I am hesitant. I want to maintain the feel of the universe and the game mechanics should support the story content as well.  Let’s go over what I have been researching. Writing it down will help me get my thoughts out of my head but also allow you to give your opinion on what system I should use. First and foremost let’s get the most famous one. Starfinder which was developed by Piazo to be a science-fiction/science-fantasy role-playing game. Lore wise it is the Pathfinder universe a few thousand years in the future. The Gods are gone magic is very prevalent and you fly aboard magically propelled spaceships. Mechanical wise it is pretty much the Pathfinder D20 system the one I am the most familiar with. It has a decent amount of crunch to it or in layman’s terms has a rigid rule structure where there are rules for most scenarios and requires a decent amount of number crunching to figure out the outcome of a die roll. It’s called a D20 system since it uses a 20 sided die or icosagon to determine the results of an action taken by a player or the Dungeon Master. The game itself has a lot of things I am looking for such as space combat futuristic technology combined with archaic themes (like laser swords) and finally name recognition. The last one and my familiarity with the system is probably the biggest draws for me. If I can build off the name recognition of Starfinder it means less work to get the game out there to the public. The downside of this is the there is a lot of extra work to be done to make the game compatible with Piazo’s product as per Open Game License before I release it. The bulk of the work would be to write away races classes add new classes and change the overall feel of the Starfinder system to model it to support my universe and I feel that the game really isn’t meant to do that. There is also making sure I cite rules properly and don’t write any Starfinder lore my lore. The last reason for my hesitation is that it has a lot of rules for things I want to do differently and it makes me feel the system won’t work as good as I would want it. Granted maybe that is a “me” problem. Now even though the compatibility work is a downside to using Starfinder for Notorious there are some good reasons to use it as well. There is a space combat system that allows everyone to contribute during a space battle that seems interesting and there are rules that I can dig up that fit into my setting. For example there are black powder weaponry and steam/cyber-punk themed items that the players can use. We can also add/modify/remove various classes and themes to better fit with Notorious a low/no magic universe. And lets not forget there has already been a lot of testing done on the D20 system and the less testing I need to do the sooner the release. Wow this got longer than I thought it would. So I guess what I will do then is I will make this a three-part series on what systems I am going to try out before I make a final decision. This week I am going to try to find a Starfinder game or run one myself and see how I feel about it. Next week we will cover the OSR game Stars without numbers and why I like and dislike it. If you are interested in joining a game let me know and we can set up some fun times. Until next week! If you are interested in checking out Starfinder for yourself please go check it out! https://paizo.com/starfinder
